How to Choose Your Wedding Officiant: 10 Questions to Ask
Your officiant is the one vendor who speaks for you on your wedding day. Photographers capture the moment, florists dress the space, but the officiant is the person your guests actually listen to, and the one who makes your marriage legal. Choosing the right one matters more than most couples realize when they first start planning.

Wherever you are getting married in BC, the process of finding the right person is the same. Here are the ten questions we think every couple should ask before they book.
1. Are you legally registered to marry us in British Columbia?
In BC, only a marriage commissioner or a religious representative registered with Vital Statistics can legally solemnize a wedding. Ask any officiant to confirm they are registered and in good standing. A great personality is not a substitute for legal authority, and this is the first box to tick.
2. Have you performed weddings like ours before?
A backyard elopement for eight in the Okanagan is a very different day than a 200-guest ballroom wedding in Vancouver or a mountaintop ceremony in Whistler. Ask how many ceremonies your officiant has performed, and how many looked something like yours. Experience with your specific format, size, and location matters.
3. Will the ceremony be personalized, or is it a template?
Some officiants use a fixed script with your names swapped in. Others build the ceremony around your story, your relationship, and the tone you want. Neither is wrong, but you should know which one you are getting. If you want your ceremony to feel unmistakably yours, ask how much of the wording is customized and how the officiant learns about you before the day.
4. What is your ceremony style?
Ask them to describe their style in their own words. Are they warm and conversational? Solemn and traditional? Funny and off-the-cuff? A short call will tell you more than any adjective, because you hear how they actually speak. The officiant sets the emotional tone for the first twenty minutes of your wedding, so their voice needs to fit the day you are picturing.
5. Do you handle the marriage licence paperwork?
The marriage licence itself is something you pick up in advance from a licence issuer in BC. On the day, though, the officiant is the one who fills in the register, signs the licence, has your witnesses sign, and submits everything to Vital Statistics within 48 hours. Ask them to walk you through their paperwork process so you know it will be handled correctly.
6. Will you be at the rehearsal?
Not every ceremony needs a formal rehearsal, but if you are having a wedding party, a processional down an aisle, or a complex ritual like a handfasting or sand ceremony, a rehearsal is worth the time. Ask whether the officiant attends rehearsals, whether that is included, and how they run them.
7. What is your backup plan if you get sick or stuck?
This is one of the most important questions and one of the most overlooked. Weather, illness, or a ferry delay from Vancouver Island can throw off any vendor’s day. Ask what happens if your officiant cannot make it. 8. How do you handle unusual venues or weather?
BC weddings happen everywhere: beaches in Tofino, vineyards in the Okanagan, mountaintops near Whistler, waterfront lawns in West Vancouver, ballrooms in Victoria. Ask how your officiant handles wind, rain, sound, and awkward sightlines. An experienced BC officiant has worked in every kind of weather and will have opinions about mic setup, standing positions, and what to do if the skies open up.
9. What is included, and what does it cost?
Get the full picture in writing. A good quote should tell you what is included: consultation calls, custom ceremony writing, rehearsal attendance, travel, and the licence submission. Travel fees in particular can vary depending on how far the officiant is driving, so ask early if you are marrying somewhere off the beaten path. 10. Do we click?
The last question is not really a question, it is a feeling. After the initial call or meeting, do you feel comfortable? Do you trust this person to stand a metre in front of you on one of the biggest days of your life and speak for you? If the answer is yes, that is often the strongest signal you will get.
