Just Engaged? Your First 5 Wedding-Planning Moves in BC

by Isle & Oak Photography

You're engaged. Here's where to actually start.

Congratulations. The ring is on, the group chat has lost its mind, and somewhere between the celebrating and the Pinterest spiral it hits you that there is a lot to figure out. Take a breath. You do not need a forty-tab spreadsheet yet.

Getting married in British Columbia really comes down to a handful of early decisions that make everything after them easier. Here are the first five moves to make, roughly in order, so you start from a calm place instead of an overwhelmed one. Bookmark this page, because everything else builds on it.

1. Pick your season, then a rough date

Before a venue, before a dress, before anything else: decide roughly when. In BC the summer stretch, June through September, is the most requested and the first to fill. Popular 2027 Saturdays are already being claimed, so if your heart is set on peak season, the earlier you lock in a date range, the more choice you keep.

If you are flexible, that is a real advantage. A Friday, a Sunday, or an off-season date in spring or fall often means gentler pricing and first pick of the vendors everyone else is competing for. Autumn in the Fraser Valley and the first snow on the mountains are quietly spectacular. Settle on a window you both love, and the rest of the planning finally has something to hang on.

2. Set a budget, and name what matters most

You do not need every number yet. You do need a ceiling, and a short list of what the two of you actually care about. Couples who decide their top two or three priorities early spend with confidence and stop second-guessing everything else.

One honest nudge while you are deciding where the money goes: the ceremony is the one part of the day you cannot redo. The flowers wilt, the playlist ends, the food gets eaten, but the words you say to each other are what you carry home. Give the moment that actually marries you its proper weight.

3. Book the three vendors that disappear first

Most wedding vendors can be booked a few months out. Three usually cannot: your officiant, your venue, and your photographer. For peak 2027 dates these are often reserved twelve to eighteen months ahead, and the best ones go first.

Your officiant is the one vendor standing with you for the part that counts, so it is worth sorting early. Vancouver Officiant has a team across the whole province, in Vancouver and the Lower Mainland, Whistler, the Okanagan, and on Vancouver Island, which means you are not limited to whoever happens to be free. Have a look at our wedding packages, then reach out through our contact form to check your date. A quick conversation tells us both whether we are the right fit, and it holds your spot before the next couple asks for it.

4. Sort the legal piece, the BC marriage licence

This part is simpler than it sounds. To be legally married in British Columbia you need a marriage licence, which costs $100 and is valid for three months from the day you buy it. There is no rush to get it the moment you are engaged, so pick it up in the season of your wedding, not the week of the proposal.

The essentials:

  • Only one of you has to apply, in person, with government photo ID for both partners. You can apply at any licence issuer in the province, not only where the wedding happens.

  • There is no residency requirement and no waiting period. You do not have to live in BC, or even in Canada, to marry here.

  • You will need two witnesses at the ceremony. There is no fixed age; what matters is that they can understand and confirm they saw you marry, and your officiant will make sure they are suitable on the day.

On the day, your officiant registers the marriage and files the paperwork for you, so the legal side is handled and you are free to simply be present for your wedding.

5. Decide how personal you want the ceremony to feel

Some couples want tradition, done beautifully. Others want their actual story told, in their own words, by someone who knows them. Deciding roughly where you fall shapes who you book and how you plan the rest.

If you want the ceremony to feel unmistakably like you, our Signature Script was built for exactly that. We write a fully personalized ceremony from your story, and someone you love, a close friend or a family member, can be the one to perform it, while a licensed Vancouver Officiant quietly handles the legal signing and registration. You get the warmth of a familiar face at the front and the paperwork done properly, without asking an untrained friend to carry the legal part.

Your next move

If you take one thing from this: reach out earlier than feels necessary. The couples who get their first-choice date and officiant are almost always the ones who started while it still felt too soon.

When you are ready, send us a note through our contact form with your date and where you are getting married. We will tell you honestly whether we are the right fit and whether your date is open. Wherever in BC you are marrying, from Vancouver and the Fraser Valley to the Okanagan and Vancouver Island, we would love to be part of it.

Congratulations again. You have got this.
